Thanks for the response! I think we can find more charitable explanations for why evangelicals (and Republicans generally) adhere to some of the policies you mention.

For instance, it’s not that Republicans (and their evangelical supporters) don’t care about poor people, it’s that they disagree with the best solution for caring for the poor. They may believe that private giving is more effective and that it gives them more oversight to ensure their money is being put to good use.

Likewise, a concern for border security can be a concern for one’s nation as a whole.

It’s possible to disagree with certain solutions while not disagreeing with the intentions behind it. Maybe some evangelicals that voted for Trump don’t care about the poor, but it’s better to ask them than to assume the worst.
